Will I need Malaria pills for Malaysia and Singapore?

I am going to be visiting Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Sarawak and Singapore this summer, I know I will be staying in a rural area in Sarawak, a friend from KL said I won't need malaria pills but it makes me nervous to go without them!
